My family name Kranias is a strong tree that grows high in the mountains of mainland Greece, the home of my ancestors. In the ancient Greek myth of Daphne, a water nymph is transformed into a tree for protection and empowerment. I imagine myself as a tree growing roots, a deep network of strength that holds me to the earth. My branches move and dance in the wind, shaping me anew. May this scarf incite you to grow strong roots and dance freely along your life path.
Kathy Kranias is a sculptor, visual arts teacher and historian. Deeply connected to the material properties and processes of clay, her sculptures explore movement, the body and emotion, engaging Greek mythology in allegories of female agency and protection.
